Camp Safety & Supervision

The safety and proper supervision of all campers is the foremost concern of the entire staff. Shepherds Camp has developed a “Protective Oversight Plan” to insure that every person has a safe stay at camp. Each year the camp is inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Broome Developmental Services. Shepherds Camp has been approved by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (NYS OMRDD) to care for adults with developmental disabilities. The approval process includes a full review of our facilities, policies and procedures, and protective oversight plan.
Here are just a few of the safety precautions and procedures that are in place:

• Night staff are awake all night, indoors and outdoors.
• All cabins are equipped with lighted security systems.
• Hourly bed checks are available in the dormitories.
• Camp features audible door alarms and gated entrances.
• Radio system facilitates communication in the event of emergency.
• Main building and kitchen feature upgraded fire suppression system.
• Medical facilities have been upgraded and enhanced.
